Christmas Mermaids

Well ....what have I been painting?.......Christmas Mermaids for my granddaughters & niece. I am not familiar with arcylics and they have actually been making me crazy, trying to find out which ones I like better, full body, or the more liquid ones, which brushes work the best, what the coverage is like, how fast they dry and also found out you do not want to use a permentt marker on the canvas and try to paint over it, the marker continues to show through- lots of frustration.

I painted 5 small individual paintings for my youngest granddaughter, then mermaids for the older girls, I thought the mermaids may have not been cute enough so I re-did them,....I felt as if I was doing the 12 days of Christmas......1 starfish, 1 seahorse, 1 whale, 1 turtle, 1 mini mermaid, 3 large mermaids, 3 mermaids with dolphins..and a paaarrrrtiged in a pair tree (total of 11 paintings) .. it would have been easier to have just bought presents - which I did that too, because I didn't know how the kids would react to them.

I held off with the larger mermaids and thought maybe I would give them to them when they were older. On Christmas day I brought them into my studio and showed them the mermaids that I was going to put to the side - and the immediately fell in love with them. My nice said I want one, my granddaughter said this one needs a crown. Then to my amazement it all turned into a wonderful Christmas gift, they were able to make them individual and place things where they wanted. I wrote what they wanted down on a piece of tape and they placed it onto the paintings. Orange starfish here, clam there, fish with blue lines, orange fish with white lines, kelp, crown and sparkles. They turned into magical paintings and a beautiful Christmas gift.

As my 2011 workshops are winding down I am thinking about all of the fun we have had painting, laughing and making new friends. I would like to thank all of my students for making this years workshops so successful and full of new adventures. There were many students that traveled long distances to attend, many from different states, Canada, Hong Kong and Venezuela.

We are all connected sharing our common bond in the world of watercolor.

My pallet

I still have my pallet set up the way I did when I first started painting, they are separated into families of color, my yellows on the upper left, reds on the right, greens along the sides, browns on the bottom and indigo in the lower left hand corner. If needed I also have other pallets and other color schemes for different subjects.

If I was to do it now, I might have considered following the color wheel and having the complimentary color on the opposite side, to make it easier to make a neutral grey. If I tried to change it now I would simply be fumbling with it and feeling like I was learning to paint all over again.

Should you change your pallet set up when taking a workshop
Many times people ask me if they should change the set up of their pallet for my workshops, I tell them to use what they have and add to it.

Label your color
To keep track of any new colors your using write the name of the color on a piece of artist tape or along the side with a permanent sharpie marker.

What I am looking for in a Pallet
One with shallow wells so water does not continue to accumulate in the bottom because that really dilute the color. I always add fresh color when painting - about a Lima bean size. I don't like to fill my well with color and let it dry, I like the creamy constancy of new color and there should be a large area in the center where you can do mixing.

In this workshop Birgit guides you step-by-step through the painting process and shares her techniques of how to simplify a flower and find the WOW factor that creates dramatic paintings. Learn how to blend and mix color to give the illusion of depth by using a limited pallet. The techniques learned in this class are the same ones she uses for her larger 60"x120" triptychs, but for class purposes you will be using 1/2 sheets for the workshop a more manageable size.

You will start with a new composition everyday for the first few days, learn how to do large White then Red flowers then expand into more complicated compositions. The final compositions will be after Birgit evaluates the class and as time permits. Sketches and reference photos are provided to help you during the learning process so you can easily follow along with each painting demonstration. You are welcome to bring your own reference photos and work from those if you prefer rather then the sketches provided. Birgit will discuss what makes a striking painting and suggests that you bring a few of your own photos for the class to look at and learn from to see how by doing a few simple things can make the composition more interesting. Bamboo Hake Brush

Many of you know how much I love my Bamboo Hake Brush (or as some people call it the (Hate brush) Here is a quick fix to prevent it from loosing too many hairs. "First try to remove as many loose hairs as possible. Then apply a little crazy glue along the bottom of the bristles just along the bamboo handle, using a toothpick or needle work the glue deeper into the center, glue should only travel about ¼ inch up the tip just so the glue can penetrate into the center of the hair. Let thoroughly dry before using.

Why I like this brush is because it holds a lot of water (more like a puddle) and it is soft enough not to lift the previous layers of color or leave angular lines when glazing. The bad thing is that is has a tendency to easily loose hair. Many other wash brushes (that may be made better) just don’t seem to apply the amount of water that I like.

17th annual ‎"Aqua Areas"

‎"Aqua Areas" is the largest juried Watercolor exhibition in the North Bay. This year, over 120 original paintings are offered for sale from over 57 of the finest Northern California watercolor artists. This is the largest 'all watercolor' showcase in the North Bay, and has developed a faithful following of art lovers over the years. I was lucky to be juried into this lovely show and won the "Jean Schultz" award, I was very happy.

It was a wonderful event and very powerful with the Honor Guard remembering all that had perished in 911.

I'll have plenty of designs many of the easier oldies but some new ones too. I always think we can do more than we can, I have so much that I want to share. :) Now if I can make sure that I don't overload my car.

I just taught a workshop here in Maine at the "Acadia Workshop Center" in Bernard Maine, what a great location for a workshop. The location is inspiring. We had very unusual weather during this time with a big heat wave as did most of the country so we decided to take a break and go down to the beach and dip our toes in the Atlantic Ocean and refresh ourselves. It was wonderful.

One day after the workshop in Bernard ME, I went into Southwest Harbor and happened upon a small gallery opening at the "Salty Dog" where I met a wonderful artist name Phil Steel, he has beautiful work. He honored me with one of his books titled "Net Loss"
Philip is a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artist,(A.S.M.A) and Florida Watercolor Society, and a Fellow Member of the American Artist Professional League. He is published in Marquis Who's Who in American Art.

Beauty in every grain of SAND

Here is a wonderful view of the Beauty that is hidden in every grain of SAND.... Viewed at a magnification of over 250 times real life, tiny grains of sand are shown to be delicate, colorful structures as unique as snowflakes. I think we will have to take a closer look next time when were painting the sand at my upcoming workshop in August in Mendocino :) View the Article

Student wins First Prize

Hi, Birgit!......... I wanted you to be the first to know! After I got back
from my wonderful workshop with you at Cheap Joe’s, my local art society was
hosting an art show – the theme of it was Georgia O’Keeffe. So I decided to
use my skills that I had just learned………and my big brushes………..and entered
two paintings. One was a closeup of a rose, and one was a closeup of a
gardenia that grows outside our front door.

Tonight was the reception, and I won FIRST PRIZE for the gardenia!!! I was
so surprised, (and I made a fool of myself by crying!) but I was so
thrilled. And I just wanted you to be the first one to know before I shout
it out to the world! I’ve won ribbons for student art shows before, but this
was the first REAL show that I’ve won anything (and it carried a cash prize
of $100).

So, thank you so much for showing me the way to painting beautiful flowers.
And I’m SO glad I decided to buy your brushes! So, thank you. I’ve attached
a picture that was taken a couple hours ago.

The other day I had another instance where a student of mine that produce a painting from my step-by-step instruction from a composition that we did in class. She asked if she could use the workshop painting that she did for a poster that would be published to promote an organization that she belonged to.She said they loved her painting, I told them that it was not appropriate. She would need to use her own composition and concept.

This is what happens
If someone recognizes the composition as mine they can think what happened to the quality of my work. The other is that it damages the name and reputation of the person that is trying to pass it on as their own as being a fraud.

I have been speaking to other instructors about this problem and here are some of the other stories I have heard. One said they went in to judge a show and the name of the judge was withheld as to not influence the subjects that were submitted. The entries were all received and then when the judge arrive he was shocked to see that one entry was almost an exact copy. Needless to say that person was released from the show and banned from further competitions.

Another story was where one National instructors was contacted by someone, who saw an instructor in their area offering workshops on the style and EXACT subject matter of the national instructor. The painting that they showed on their web-site was taken directly off the national instructors web-site but his name had been removed. Needless to say he contacted her with a cease and desist order...she was so apologetic etc. and agreed to do so. Only for him to find out later that the only difference she made was to include his name on the paintings on her web-site. This is not ethical.

This morning it was brought to my attention of another artist that has replicated my work and is selling it on Etsy. I see that they have already sold three and have two others posted. If your a new artist there are basic copyright laws that means you do not infringe upon another artist's work, reference material or concept -you can take a look at what I mean "here"
.....and if you are an experienced artist you should know better or legal action will be taken...Here is the image of the original

As it turns out after contacting the artist and Etsy they pulled her store immedaitly. So it is no longer visable.

At the same time another student contacted me wondering if she could use the painting that she did in class using my referance photo & sketch for a poster. I would have liked to have said yes but unfortunalty this is unacceptable. If someone reconize the image as mine (which is very likely) and the quality was less than what they expect of my work it is not good for my reputation or for the other artist which can then be known as a fruad.

Just did a Demonstration for AWS group "Artist Workshops of Sonoma County" what a lovely group of artist's, many seemed just like old friends. It was such a treat to visit Sebastopol, warm weather, amazing roses - it was hard not to stop at every nursery along the way.

I'm explaining how when I paint a rose I may think it's going to be soft and delicate, but most times it just does not have the depth that I want to I continue to push it until I am satisfied.

I would like to just keep painting but I guess I better get ready for my demo this week and pack for my workshops in North Carolina & Denver.

I thought maybe I would try a new simple composition but looks simple but working with the color can be a problem I am using the color mix of Permanent Alizarin Crimson and Cobalt Blue it's good & bad.

Good thing is that the color can separate and settle quickly on the paper / bad thing the same thing making it hard to work with for someone that isn't use to it. This just might be a little too frustrating for students, so I better re-think my plan :)

Not Your Average Rose

It doesn't matter what I do my paintings never disappear on the wall, Judy Bett's once said to me your paintings command attention. Yes I guess that's true...no hiding for me, even if I wanted to.

I usually stay away from roses since mine are always SO BOLD and not very delicate. This rose painting started out light and pretty (as they always seem to do).... but it just did not have the depth that I wanted. So I started layering then there I go again "intense".

I felt a little uncomfortable about sharing this one, as I was painting this piece I knew it was more of my subconscious journey rather than a replication of my reference photo. many times my choice of color and compositions reflect the past or future, a premonition of sorts.

When I have the time to paint for me and not for workshops, it is a spiritual journey because I never know what the outcome will be.

Below You can see how the light rose has glowing color but not much depth. I just can't help myself, I can not feel that a painting is done unless I can peer under a petal or feel that I can travel into the center of the flower.

Working with Tranparent color you can create deeper color but it is difficult to get the contrast that I'm looking for.

Mendocino Botanical Gardens

before the workshop today we took a field trip to the Mendocino Botanical Gardens for take advantage of all the blooming Rhododendrons for new reference material. Beautiful day, great light no wind, absolutely perfect.

What a wonderful opertuntity for students to take photos and get new refereance material with all of the Rhodendrons in Bloom. They always say that they want to know how I see the flower and home I create the compostion - well that takes about 2 minutes then they happily dart off clicking....it's funny...poof their gone, just like kids. The Fort Bragg Botantical Gardens is the only one in the states that goes all of the way to the ocean. We never have the time to see it all, but students are always welcome to go back at the end of the day or at a later time. I try not to take much class time with our tour so we always meet there before class and catch the morning light.

Fear is all that holds you back

Last night I found a letter from about 10 years ago, where I was asked if I would go and speak to the art class at the "Maharishi University of Management" Consciousness-Based education. I never did. As I reflect on it now, it was because I was so afraid of traveling,flying even driving long distances at that time, I was filled with all sorts of fear. I thought how could I teach a workshop to them, what would I say...etc. etc. At this moment in time I would consider it an honor and to a place with Consciousness-Based education ..that would be amazing. When I think about how far I have come I am astonished. My point of saying this is, that fear is all that holds us back from everything wonderful.

I have just found a wonderful new location for a couple of workshops in 2012 in the Napa Valley at a spa in Calistoga. The heart of the Wine country. You will be able to paint into the night or enjoy yourself in the hot spring mineral pools, mud baths or treat yourself to message treatments or go wine tasting after the workshop. I am now planing 2 workshops, one in March during the mustard bloom and the other in October during the crush season when the fall color is outstanding.

Sometimes when you want to sign up for a workshop, you may find that it's full and there is a wait list and the wait list seems just too long so why bother. I just want you to know to my surprise I just had a very popular workshop that has been filled for at least 6 months in advance have seven cancellations over the last month, which means that most of the people that had their name on the list are now able to get in, so never be discouraged and openings do happen.

Wild Iris Workshop Update

We all had so much fun. It's funny how this simple little flower can take so much time to paint. We tried to accomplish a lot for this one day workshop we really needed two. We started to build the flower, color, veining & shadows but just ran out of time to finish it with the background. After the workshop Lisa and I went out to Limantour Beach to take pictures of the blooming Pacific Wild Iris. In March there are vast displays of them all around the park (Point Reyes National Seashore. Next time for the workshop I would like to make it a two day and bring everyone out with me to take photos and view them in their natural state. It truly is an impressive site.

Great idea for travel sketching

Here is a wonderful idea from Vanita one of my students in Houston TX is to take a small Altoids tin and fill with a light molding clay (the kind that you bake) then press in wells from your brush handle and fill with color. Great idea creating an inexpensive travel kit for being able to sketch anywhere - now all you need are tiny 2x3 pieces of paper that can fit into your pocket. (similar to what I have in my Field Studies DVD)

Heard a very interesting story from a student of mine today. After another workshop she had done with me she was very proud of what she had done and went back to her art group to share it. ....Funny thing, another artist that was there chastised her in front of the group for stealing her composition, and told her that it was hers and that she was selling prints etc of that painting.Only to find out, that person had already taken several of my workshops and was now calling it her's .... she then took the other woman aside and apologized and said she never thought that I would have used the same composition again...and that since she lived some distance away I would never know...has it come to this...it is a small world and there is something called copyrights and ethics.

I discuss that in many of my workshops and that you want to be known for your own work, not as someone that is stepping or stealing from someone else, it does not build a good reputation. I really think what I don't like about this most.. is that this other artist tried to embarrass and crush the enthusiasm and spirit of the other student which is not right and this is why I am mentioning it.

Masking on Damp Paper

I was just reminded that many of you don't know that you can apply Masking / Frisket to damp paper for softer edges. Some will work better than others - I like Pebeo. Other products may have a tendency to adhere to the paper while drying. I use this technique all of the time in my "Treasures from the shore" or "From the Sea" workshops in Point Reyes and Mendocino.

The trick is how wet the surface is when applying the masking or it can look like a blob. You can see an example in my book "Watercolor Essentials" from North Light or go to my fan page Birgit O'Connor Watercolors - photos pg. 2 Mendocino 2010 (look for the demos of rocks on the wall)

Some masking / frisket brands suggest NOT to use it on damp paper, that is why I like Pebeo - it works great!! I have never had any problems with it... I have had students use other brands without any problems but it is good to keep in mind that the brand may make a difference I use this technique on Arches paper so try a test first if using something else.

Where to find it: Cheap Joe's, Dick Blick, ASW, Jerry's Art-O-Rama and maybe some local art stores official name is Pebeo Drawing Gum :)

tip: - just like anything else how damp the surface is will really make a difference to your success :)

Babesiosis is carried by ticks. It can cause extremely high fevers and even death!

When I was horribly ill one doctor told me that I shouldn't watch programs like this or do research on babesia or Lyme because she said that it is better left up to the doctors. ...Right....funny thing non of those doctors diagnosed problem or knew what tests to ask for, only by doing my own research I was able to ask the right questions and know what I was looking for. ...(makes me so mad - it is better to be informed and not in fear)

The blessing from my own experiences is that I can help others... and am not shy to talk about it. It is a very strange thing, I don't know if most people people with Lyme are afraid of judgement (it seems that some are) and others go into denial. (That has ben shocking to me). The problem with denial is the longer you ignore it, the worse it gets and you start treating the symptoms and not the underlying problem.

That was what they were doing to me (treating the symptoms) but intuitively I knew that there was a bigger problem and in fact in the beginning I felt that there was some sort of virus moving through my body, in fact I even said to my family it feels like I have been sprinkle with some sort of Germ Warfare.

It didn't feel like a cold or a flu it was a little different and hard to put my finger on it and didn't know how to explain it to a doctor......but then even after having classic symptoms and a good record of events. The doctors didn't catch it, I requested my blood to be tested by a top Lyme lab but the blood went to the more convenient lab for them, resulting in three false negative tests...and it goes on from there. So believe me I am not blowing smoke I am warning you.

Little Things Make a Big Difference in Marketing your Art

Have you ever stood in an art gallery and said to yourself: "My work
is better than the art in this gallery. Why are these artists selling in
galleries and I'm not?"

I have spent the last several years helping artists answer this
question. I have discovered it is the little things that can make all
the difference in an artist's career.

Before I share some of these little things that add up to make a big
difference, let me introduce myself. My name is Jason Horejs, I own
Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. I have owned the gallery for over
eight years, and have been in the gallery business for 17 years.

Can little things make a difference in your career? I invite you to
ponder the suggestions below, all ideas I will expand upon in my
upcoming workshop. These little ideas, put into practice with your
marketing plan will help you present your work more professionally. They
will help you get into galleries and sell more of your art.

Quality Check. I have known and worked with hundreds of artists over the
years. The most successful artists are devoted to high quality. They
have the ability to step back from their work and look at it through
their buyer's eyes. Art collectors are picky. They demand attention to
detail. Their homes are immaculate. You must create work that will fit
seamlessly into their homes.

Your medium doesn't matter - sculpture, jewelry, paintings,
photography or fiber art - the presentation must be flawless.

Think of each work you create as a masterpiece. Treat it as such.

One small thing to improve the quality of your work: Invite someone
you trust to evaluate the quality of your art. You should invite an
artist you admire, or a designer, or a gallery owner over to the studio
for coffee. Present 5-6 pieces. Ask the question "what are three things
I could do to improve the quality of my presentation."

An objective observer will see your art in a way you never could.
Repeat this process every 1-2 years and make a commitment to constantly
improve your quality.

Read a Book. Collectors and dealers love to talk history. As you begin
to show in galleries and interact with collectors at shows you will find
they love to talk about past masters. Your relationships with collectors
and dealers will deepen if you can converse fluently about art history.
I suggest you strive to understand the major art movements from the
impressionists through the present day. This understanding will also
enrich your work as you are inspired by the great artist's lives and
works.

One little thing to work on: Visit your local book store or
Amazon.com and order a biography of one of your favorite artists. Commit
to read 2 artist biographies per year. Don't limit your reading only to
artists you like. I wasn't a fan of Willem deKooning's work until I read
about his life. He is now one of my favorite artists.

Analyze your Competition. You don't have to reinvent the wheel when it
comes to marketing your work. With a little work, you will find hundreds
of artists whose work is comparable to yours. Learn from them. Do what
they do.

One little thing to work on: Every week, devote one hour to
researching your competition online. Type keywords describing your work
into a search engine and you will quickly encounter your competitors.
Develop a list of 10 artists you feel are closest to you in style,
genre, subject, and/or experience. Analyze them.

Ask:

Where is the artist from?

What is his/her background?

What is his/her education?

What does the artist's resume look like? What about his/her bio and
artist's statement?

What galleries is he/she showing in?

How does he/she advertise his/her work?

How is his/her work priced?

How is he/she presenting his/her work?

The insight you will gain through this weekly exercise will prove
invaluable to you as you develop your marketing plans. By understanding
your competition you can better tailor your work to the market. You can
price your work competitively. You can better understand the types of
galleries you should approach.

Use an Inventory Number. As you begin to experience success, organizing
your inventory becomes critical. Using an inventory number is an easy
way to start to control your inventory. As you move artwork from the
studio to your galleries, and from gallery to gallery and inventory
number will make it easy to track your work. Titles can get mixed up,
but inventory numbers are almost infallible.

If you don't already have an inventory numbering system, start with
a high number (3000, for example). Nothing says "new artist" like a low
inventory number.

Send a Thank-you note. As you begin to work with collectors and
galleries, your goal is not to sell art. Your end-goal is to create
relationships. Relationships will lead to a lifetime of sales. You will
be amazed what one simple thing like a hand-written thank-you note can
do for your relationships. In this age of digital communication and
voicemail interaction, a hand-written thank you note stands out.

When a gallery sends you a commission check you should immediately
sit down and write a thank-you note. Keep the note simple:

Spend Some Time on Marketing. I am amazed at how many artists will spend
long days in the studio, weeks in workshops, but then wonder why their
work isn't selling. Often, these same artists are devoting very little
time to marketing. You should be spending 10% of your time marketing.
You will be amazed by how much you can accomplish in this small amount
of time, and this is one small thing that will make a huge difference in
your career.

I viewed the rest of the DVD and it is just as great as the first 5 minutes. I photographed Point Bonita and it seems to me that a vertical scape of land pieces jutting out and water splashing up against land with little lighthouse at bottom would be challenging for me, BUT with these new skills from DVD I might be able to pull it off. THAT would make me a very happy camper.

I have been thoroughly enjoying your new DVD, it was a great follow up to the workshop a couple of weeks ago and will help me retain much of what I learned. I was also able to pick up on a few subtle things that I missed in the workshop. I really like the way you have set it up so that you can navigate to one demonstration at a time through the table of contents, and I think you did a great job of zooming in and out to demonstrate the techniques. It was also really helpful that you showed the application of specific techniques in more than one painting. Given that there are 8 demonstrations and it is 85 minutes, I think you could charge more than what you are selling it for on your website.

Covering large areas quickly

Hi Birgit:
I was attempting to paint as you do, following along with your video, but my own flower, etc.
The question is that I had a large area in the background on the upper left top. By the time I painted around the detailed areas of the flower and then attempted to pull the paint to the edges, I was not getting the flow that I wanted and needed. I painted that area 4 different times trying to get the look. Any suggestions?

Hi Sharon
It might be hard to make a suggestion with out seeing what you are doing exactly, I usually work pretty dry along the edges with a small brush then increase the size of the brush as the area gets larger then pull the color out with water or diluted color.

After the workshop Carmen and I went to dinner, we notice out of the corner of our eye Fire Dancers at the end of Noyo Harbor it was magical. There was a mother that was spinning her fire pots while her 10 year old son waved a blue glow stick.

We had wonderful time in Mendocino, a very small class of 8 students which was very nice and personal. We worked on Atmospheric landscapes and simplifying the landscape into dramatic paintings. (Here is a painting that one of my students did while in the class.)

Trinity Workshop

Amazing - this little community in Northern California has such special energy, the students were wonderful, they came from all over these mountains, to this small community center. On one of my adventures with my hostess Evelyn Ward who teaches watercolor herself in Lewiston / Weaverville she brought me to this Buddhist temple that I found very healing.
The trout fishing is wonderful in this area and I was so tempted to throw in a line.

I think I am getting just a little more energy everyday, at least I believe I am. July will be a test I will have a one day workshop on the 18 at the Point Reyes National Seashore then a 3 day, July 20-22 in Placerville CA. I am really trying to pace myself and I truly have a new respect for people that have an illness and what limitations there can be etc. etc.

I am thinking of hopefully soon doing some informative mini clips for YouTube or even a webinar, it is all just in the thinking stage at the moment, and what would be the best venue.

I have to admit I am now glad that I postponed my out of state workshops. This healing process is not much fun the Herx reaction takes you down almost to the beginning of the illness before you go up and hopefully recover. Even feeling really lousy I can't give up or I have given them a chance to regroup. I know in some cases even after all of these meds that I am taking it doesn't help but I am at war with these creatures and will keep a positive attitude and will not give up.

I did finally paint the other day for an hour, I was given Dr. Martin watercolors to try, they said that they are now light fast. I tried them in the background and the colors are very intense. Unfortunately it just didn't feel like me or what I was looking for at that moment so I started another painting using WN which felt much more comfortable to me, and I am starting to like this one. I know I need to paint more and that it will help me through my own healing process.
If I get an hour in of painting I am really happy, I still have to be very careful not to overdo it, one day I might feel better I then do more than I really should.

Watercolor in Motion will be translated into Hebrew

I just found out that my book "Watercolor in Motion" has been picked up by an Israeli publisher and will translated into Hebrew. How cool, I am very excited about spreading the word of watercolor. They are going to have subtitles in Hebrew, the editor suggested next time I talk even slower so they have more room. I appreciated her suggestion and told her there is fine line between going too fast and putting someone to sleep, but I will defiantly keep that in mind. She told me that she was surprised that her publisher chose the book he normally would go for leather bound incredibly serious (arty) books. She asked him what he liked about this one, he said it made him happy and smile, and this new editor is now inspired to try watercolor herself again. very cool

Point Reyes National Seashore -old Life boat station

What a great workshop this past weekend at the old Life boat station in the Point Reyes National Seashore we were working on "treasure from the shore" workshop. We had baby Elephant Seals outside the door and 3 whale spouting at the end of the dock. Question:
I was rearranging my craft room and found a VHS tape "Field Studies". I hadn't actually watched it before because I've been using my computer with DVD's. I have had a block lately. I've been trying to get into painting again but found I was rearranging,buying different colors and gadgets but couldn't get inspired to paint. I watched the video and decided to try your suggestion starting with small scraps. I have been painting and enjoying painting ever since. I'm satisfied with using a few tried and true colors instead of trying to find the "new" color that would inspire me. That was the best tip I have ever received,my second was using a bigger brush (also from you).
I was wondering what color you mix to get a good sand color?

I like French Ultramarine Blue mixed with either Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna lean the mix a little more to the browns, at least that is what works for our beaches here. Let me know if that works if not get back to me and I will come up with a another combo for you.

Question for Painting on Location

Q: Good Afternoon Birgit,
Thanks for the email, so glad the your book is available at Barnes and Noble, and Amazon. I shop at these two places. I have this book already and it signed which I found very nice this personal touch and the fact that you answer my email. Providing me with a helpful solution to my challenge with the back ground color for my floral painting. I use to paint a lot years ago and life just got in the way too many things happen. Now I'm getting back into it and your book with the DVD has been very helpful and inspirational. My next challenge is to paint on location. The last time I found it distracting and I couldn't focus on just one flower, scene, or subject matter, not to mention the bugs, mosquitoes, the light changing so fast. There is so much to deal with before you get ready to paint. I got so stress out, all I could do was take lots of photos, with the intend to use them when I got home. Do you have any suggestions?
I'm one of those student that learn by demo. Thanks again for any inputs you may want to share.

Nice to hear from you, yes....painting outside in watercolor is very different than working on the studio I have found that I am happier with my paintings if I paint much smaller, looser and use more wet into wet techniques while on location, I mean small. 2x3 - 4x5 not much bigger. I am then able to capture more of the essence instead of every detail, for details I can take a photo.

Out of State Workshops - Postponed

It is with a heavy heart I will have to postpone many of my out of State (California) workshops due to health issues. In May of 2007 I came down with Bells Palsy, in 2008 I came down other health problems only to find out that these were all symptoms of Lymes / Babesia (tick diseases) -the price I paid for long walks in nature. During this time I requested Lymes testing from my doctors and twice the results came back negative along with clinical misdiagnoses.

It is very common to have false negative or false positive results with Lymes testing. Fortunately it was one of my students that directed me to a lab (Igenex), which is known for the most accurate testing available and for that I will be forever grateful. After a more extensive full panel test I ended up with positive for Lymes result along with another tick co-infection. I have been treated since August of 2008 but unfortunately my test results still show an aggressive form of Lymes. So at this time we will be changing my treatments to more aggressive form making it more difficult for me to travel long distances but I do plan to be better soon.

My hope in sharing my illness with you is to bring awareness to Lymes Disease and other tick born diseases. Lymes is extremely difficult to diagnose as I said most tests are useless. If you do ever decide that you need a test - please consider an extensive full panel test that takes about three weeks for results not three days.

Lymes is the great imposter and mimics many other diseases such as MS, Lupus, Alzheimer's, Fibromyalgia, Parkinson's etc. and is very difficult to diagnose. The average time for a diagnosis is 22 months and 7 doctors later, not to mention thousands of dollars, and then finding a doctor that understands Lymes is another story.

If you have an unexplained illness, extreme fatigue, one thing after another going wrong, or the doctors think it is in your head please consider a really good Lymes test through Igenex.

Q: Hi Birgit, Yayyyy, I did find your book under my Christmas tree (Watercolour in Motion)....it is better than expected! I have looked through many books on the subject and yours is by far the best..honestly. :) Will look forward to your next book. I have a question for you, if you have the time to answer: I have used masking several times in the past and it was always a 50/50 type deal as to wether it would come off without taking the sizing off the paper. I ruined several paintings and wasted a lot of good paper because of it so I stopped using it. However the type of painting I enjoy doing really does need some blocking out with it. Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong? I did try putting a little dish soap in with it as suggested but it didnt help. Hi Cindy I really don't use it much and have not had too many problems with it but here are some ideas o why it may not be working. perhaps it is the brand - I prefer Pebeo drawing gum W&N is ok too.
It might be old - old fluid can stick.
If you leave it in the sun or use a hair dryer it can bake on.
If you leave it on the paper for a long period of time it can stick. (I have left it on some demos for years and it still come off but I have heard about others having the same problems as you.
